State-of-the-Art NICU Care When it Matters Most

When each second counts and every breath matters it is reassuring to know that a team of exceptional health care providers are standing by to provide state-of-the-art treatment for every newborn that enters the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital in Albany, Georgia. One second can make a difference in the life of a critically ill newborn, yet comfort lies in knowing help is available for infants throughout the region.

Phoebe NICU is a Level III Provider of Newborn Services

The birth of a baby is typically a joyous occasion, but when that baby is born too early or very sick, it can be a very frightening experience for a family.

The NICU nurses, neonatologists and staff at Phoebe’s NICU understand how traumatic it can be. To help make it easier, they work with family members to help them understand what is happening and how they can be involved in the care of their infant.

Parents are encouraged to spend time in the unit; even the most fragile newborn benefit from the gentle touch and sound of their parent’s voices.

State of Georgia Designated Perinatal Center

Phoebe is also one of the six state-designated perinatal centers. Our Neonatal Transport Team operates the NICU ambulance, entirely equipped to transport sick infants from throughout our perinatal region of 22 counties.

Likewise, our Perinatal Outreach Department provides educational classes for both neonatal and maternal problems that may arise throughout the Southwest Georgia area.

Mother/Baby Unit

Phoebe’s Mother/Baby unit at Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital provides recovery and postpartum services to help mothers and their babies following delivery, and after they arrive home.

Mothers get the latest instructions on baby care and they’re encouraged to ask questions during their stay.

Mother/Baby care services include:

  • Hands-on baby care instruction
  • Professional nursing assistance
  • Baby care procedure demonstrations

We encourage mothers to choose breastfeeding. A lactation consultant is available to assist with:

  • Breast care
  • Breastfeeding
  • Options for pumping

All of these in-unit services help new mothers leave the hospital with the confidence to care for their newborn.
