Total Knee Arthroplasty Surgical Outcomes

About the procedure: A total knee arthroplasty – also known as TKA or knee replacement, is surgery that removes parts of the knee joint and replaces it with artificial parts.

Understanding the data: With three infections out of 83 TKA surgeries in 2019, Phoebe Sumter’s outcomes were above the expected rate for this procedure.

How we’re improving outcomes: There are modifiable patient risk factors (such as diabetes and, weight, nutritional status). We work with you and your care provider to minimize these factors to reduce the likelihood of infection. Before surgery and prior to discharge, each patient receives wound care education to optimize healing and minimize the risk of infection.

For each infection, we conduct a systematic case review with all members of the surgical care team to identify any opportunities and act upon them. We are continually evaluating best practice treatments using the latest evidence based guidelines.
