Infection Prevention at Phoebe

Surgical Site Infection -
Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital

A surgical site infection is an infection that occurs after surgery in the location where the surgery took place.
Why is it important: Surgical Site Infection (SSI) measures include infections that occur within 30 to 90 days following a surgical procedure. The risk of an infection can be related to multiple factors, and the risk can be reduced by various steps taken before, during, and after surgery. Every patient and caregiver can be empowered through education and working with their health care team to prevent infections from occurring.
How we’re creating better outcomes: Providing patients and caregivers education on preventing the infection, risk factors, signs and symptoms to report, process of checks and balances for before, during and after the procedure that are followed by the clinical staff. We are also implementing measures that have been demonstrated to reduce the risk of SSI and working with patients and families to take the steps to improve outcomes, such as preoperative teaching, using selected skin preparation for disinfection the night prior to surgery, attaining good blood sugar control for patients with diabetes, and maintaining proper skin care for a surgical incision after surgery.
Phoebe's Data versus Nationally Reported Data: The numbers that are included represent the most real-time data available. Other national reporting sites share data that comprises of averages spanning multiple years and is typically 2 to 4 years old. We submit this data quarterly to the National Health Safety Network (NHSN), which is the organization Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) extracts their publically reported data from. There are very specific criteria for what is defined as a Surgical Site Infection (SSI), which we adhere to.
