“Next week, we will mark a milestone in our COVID-19 response.  Wednesday will be one year since we confirmed our first COVID-19 case.  We never expected we would experience the challenges we have faced over the last year or that we would still be caring for dozens of COVID-19 patients each day; yet, the Phoebe Family remains undaunted and truly committed to guiding our communities through this ongoing crisis,” said Scott Steiner, Phoebe Putney Health System President and CEO.  “We have set aside next Wednesday as a day to commemorate this anniversary, thank our community for their support, remember the lives lost to this virus, and honor survivors and healthcare heroes.  We are planning several events, including one which we encourage the public to attend.  We’re inviting people to drive through our hospital campuses Wednesday night to highlight our region’s strength and unity and to show support for our patients and staff.  We will line our hospital driveways with luminaries in memory of COVID-19 victims, and we will illuminate our facilities in red to honor healthcare workers.  We’re also planning a special light show at our main campus.  We encourage people to make signs of support, decorate their vehicles and drive through our campuses with their flashers on as we come together on this solemn anniversary,” Steiner added.

Phoebe’s Day of Remembrance community drive-through luminary event will take place from 7:30 – 8:30 p.m. on Wednesday, March 10 on all four hospital campuses.  Participants are encouraged to follow these directions:

  • Albany – Enter the Phoebe main campus from Jefferson St. and proceed to the W. 2nd Ave. exit.  Groups wanting to watch the laser light show may park briefly in the main parking lot before also exiting onto W. 2nd Ave.  Participants are encouraged to turn right onto W. 2nd Ave., then right onto N. Monroe St. which will take them to the main entrance of Phoebe North.  They can exit the Phoebe North campus from 13th Ave. to the right or 14th Ave. to the left.
  • Americus – Enter the Phoebe Sumter campus from Hwy. 19 and exit onto Hwy. 280.
  • Sylvester – Coming from Sylvester on S. Isabella St., enter the Phoebe Worth campus via the second driveway on the south side of the property and exit through the first driveway on the north side of the property.

Phoebe will also host tribute walks and Day of Remembrance ceremonies at each hospital campus for employees.  To maintain proper social distancing and avoid large gatherings, the public cannot be invited to those events.
