Phoebe Physicians Governing Board

As a true not-for-profit health system, Phoebe is operated by a volunteer board drawn from the community it serves. They serve without pay, volunteering time and expertise. They set policy, create goals, evaluate management’s performance, and ensure Phoebe operates in the best interest of the community. Below you can learn more about our volunteer governing board members for Phoebe Physicians.

 

Richard Bowe, MD | Chairman

Richard Bowe, MD, is an anesthesiologist.

He earned his medical degree from the University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Medicine. He completed his anesthesia residency and an internal medicine internship from Dartmouth-Hitchock Medical Center.


Derek Heard, MD | Vice Chairman

Derek Heard, MD, has been a part of the medical community in this area for more than 16 years.

He is currently a primary care physician and the Phoebe Physicians Medical Director of Primary Care. He served as the Chairman of the Southwest Georgia Diabetes Coalition and was named the 2017 Phoebe Physician of the Year.


Brian Church

Brian Church, is chief financial officer and chief administrative officer for Phoebe Putney Health System.

He joined Phoebe in 2014 after 12 years at a large not-for-profit healthcare system in southwest Florida. He is a fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives and a member of the Healthcare Financial Management Association.


Mark Cohen, MD

Mark Cohen, MD, is an interventional cardiologist and the Medical Director of Heart & Vascular Services.

He received his medical degree from Indiana University School of Medicine and completed his internship and residency in internal medicine at Parkland Memorial Hospital in Dallas, Texas. He completed his cardiology fellowship at University of Alabama in Birmingham, Alabama.


Kathy Hudson, MD

Kathy Hudson, MD, has spent 20 years serving the healthcare needs of southwest Georgia.

She moved to southwest Georgia in 2001 and began working in the Emergency Department at Phoebe Sumter Medical Center (formally Sumter Regional Hospital) in Americus. After dividing her time among various emergency departments in the region, Dr. Hudson transitioned to hospital medicine in 2005. She joined Phoebe Physicians Inpatient Medical Specialist team in 2008. She served as Assistant Regional Medical Director from 2008 to 2018, and Regional Medical Director from 2019 and was named Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital’s Chief Medical Officer in January 2021.

Dr. Hudson served as the President of the Medical Staff for two consecutive terms (2017-2018 and 2019-2020), making her the first female president at Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital.

Dr. Hudson is board-certified with a focus in hospital medicine with the American Board of Internal Medicine and is a Senior Fellow in Hospital Medicine with the Society of Hospital Medicine. She completed her residency and earned her medical degree from the Medical College of Georgia. Additionally, she holds a bachelor’s degree in chemistry from Augusta College.


Chirag Jani, MD

Chirag Jani, MD is a Geriatrician, Hematologist and Oncologist at Phoebe Cancer Center.

His leadership roles have included: Chairman of Cancer Committee, Multidisciplinary Breast and Tumor Board, Chair of Quality Committee, Principal Investigator Pharmaceutical and Federally Funded Oncology Studies, and Chairman of Department of Medicine. He is currently Medical Director of Oncology and Hematology, co-director of Willson Hospice House and Associate Professor at Augusta University. He and his wife, Ami, have two sons, Yash and Preet.

Dan Martin, MD

Dan Martin, MD, has received national recognition for quality performance and was named to Georgia Trend’s 2021 Top Doctors.

A member of Phoebe Vascular Surgery, he has served as medical director of vascular services at Phoebe since 2009. Board certified in vascular surgery, he received his medical degree from Southern Illinois University and completed his internship, residency and fellowship at the University of Florida. Dr. Martin brought a new level of care to patients in South Georgia, including a minimally-invasive approach to correct abdominal aortic aneurysms.


Sanjay Munireddy, MD

Sanjay Munireddy, MD, is the Medical Director of Surgical Oncology at Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital.

He has a high level of expertise in surgical oncology including breast conserving surgery and laparoscopic/robotic surgical technique. He earned his medical degree from Karnataka Institute of Medical Sciences in India and completed his residency at Sinai Hospital of Baltimore. He also completed an internship at the University of South Florida College of Medicine and is fellowship trained from Roger Williams Medical Center, Boston University School of Medicine.


Scott Steiner

Scott Steiner joined the Phoebe family in March, 2019.

He previously served as CEO of four Tenet hospitals in Detroit, MI. He began his career in healthcare administration as Director of Physician Network & Development for a hospital in East St. Louis, IL in 1992. Scott and his wife, Tracy have two daughters. Scott is a member of the Phoebe Health System, Phoebe Hospital, Phoebe Sumter, Phoebe Worth, Phoebe Health Ventures and Phoebe Physicians Boards.
