Scan for Cancer Initiative A Success
The SCAN initiative (Scan for Cancer – ACCESS NOW) was a collaborative effort started by Dr. James Hotz in late spring of 2016 that included Albany Area Primary Health Care, Department of Health District 8-2, Horizons Community Solutions-Cancer Coalition of South Georgia, Carlton Breast Health Center, Phoebe Putney Health System, Phoebe Physicians, American Cancer Society and SOWEGA-AHEC.
The team provided mammograms for uninsured patients in order to meet a June 23, 2016 deadline to take advantage of state funds provided through the Georgia Access to Care, Treatment and Services (ACTS) Grant aimed at reducing breast cancer within indigent communities. The results of the SCAN Initiative are as follows:
