Childbirth Education/Lactation Services

We offer a full range of services, including information resources, prepared childbirth and lactation services, family counseling and community-wide programs on health-related issues and disease prevention.

Prepared Childbirth Classes -- A comprehensive course for couples who are preparing for a positive birth experience. Expectant parents will learn how to be in control during their labor experience by using breathing and relaxation techniques and learn how to play an active role in their birth experience. The education component will help reduce the fear of the unknown. This four-week course includes a tour of Labor and Delivery, the Mother/Baby Center and much more.

Big Brother/Big Sister Sibling Class -- The arrival of a new baby in the family can be an exciting time for everyone involved. To the brother or sister of the new infant, it may also be a time of confusion. This fun, upbeat class is designed to prepare the big brother/big sister, ages 4-10, for the arrival of their new baby sibling. An age appropriate video and activities are used. We discuss their feelings related to the new baby, what to expect when the new baby arrives, and safety issues with a new baby. Children must have an adult accompany them to the class and tour. Each child receives a "Big Brother" or "Big Sister" sticker.

Special Tots -- This class is designed specifically for the soon-to-be big brother/big sister younger than four years old. We will discuss feelings, what to expect and how they can help mom and dad with the new baby. Age appropriate video and activities are used. Child must be accompanied by an adult. These are scheduled by appointment at 229-312-0053.

Breastfeeding Class -- Health experts agree that breastfeeding is the best way to feed your baby during the first year. They also agree that there are skills, which much be learned. Mother Nature gives you the ability, but not the know-how. This informative class includes such topics as how to prepare for breastfeeding, breast care and the father's role in breastfeeding.

Hospital Tour -- You will tour Phoebe's state-of-the-art Birthing Center and Mother/Baby Center. For more information, call 229-312-0053.

Phoebe's Lactation Center provides the following: prenatal breastfeeding classes, hospital consultations, outpatient consultations after discharge, breastfeeding aids, breastfeeding help and education for health professionals in the community.

Breastfeeding Helpline -- Call 229-312-0053 from 8:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.

Childbirth in a Weekend -- This all-day Saturday class gives the expectant couple an overview of labor, the birth process, breathing & relaxation techniques, comfort measures, coach’s role and expectations, newborn initial care, and the care of the mother during postpartum. A free guidebook is provided. Please bring 2-3 pillows to class. Class size is limited to eight couples, and everyone has a break for lunch on their own during the weekend class. Please register early. 

Pregnancy Class -- This class is designed for expectant couples early in their pregnancy. Topics covered will be the changes that mom’s body will go through up to the 6th month, prenatal care and staying healthy, nutrition and medication, tests, life during pregnancy, fetal growth and development, and potential complications.

Maternity Coordinator Visit -- To help our expectant couples, we are offering a one-on-one session with a nurse to discuss your personal birth experience. We recommend this visit at about 22-25 weeks. This is a wonderful way to get more information and guidance. These are scheduled by appointment at 229-312-0053.

Safe Sitter Class -- This is a fun and creative class for boys and girls ages 11 to 15. Come learn all there is to be a safe babysitter. Learn about babies, toddlers and preschoolers. Learn how to handle a choking baby or toddler. Bring your lunch!

Infant Choking & CPR -- This class is designed to teach parents and grandparents the basics of infant choking and resuscitation. Safety concerns are also discussed.
