Jeremy Joyner, MD
Jeremy Joyner, MD, general surgery, joined the Phoebe Physician Group in 2009 and is a member of the medical staff at Phoebe Sumter Medical Center. He is a member of Phoebe Sumter Surgical Associates and practices alongside his father, Dr. Douglas Joyner, as well as Dr. Sean Sheff.
A native of Americus, Dr. Joyner returns to Southwest Georgia after completing a Surgical Fellowship in minimally invasive, endoscopic, and bariatric surgery at the Cuyuna Regional Medical Center in Crosby, Minnesota. He completed both an internship and residency in general surgery at the Medical College of Georgia (Augusta).
He is board certified by the American Board of Surgery with an interest in minimally invasive approaches to gastrointestinal disease, including obesity, reflux, and colon surgery. Current pursuits include single site laparoscopic surgery and mini-laparoscopic surgery, employing fewer and smaller incisions to improve postoperative pain, cosmetic appearance, and recovery time for his patients. Dr. Joyner is an active member of the American College of Surgeons and the Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons.
After graduating from Americus High School, he earned a bachelor of arts in biology (pre-med) from Taylor University in Upland, Ind., before moving on to earn his doctorate of medicine from the Medical College of Georgia.
When he is not working, he enjoys nothing more than spending time with his family: his wife, Laura (Sullivan) Joyner, also a native of Americus and children Tyler, Cayce and Anna Katherine.
Sean Sheff, MD
Sean Sheff, MD, is a general and minimally invasive surgeon who joined the Phoebe Physician Group in 2011 and is a member of the medical staff at Phoebe Sumter Medical Center. He is also a member of Phoebe Sumter Surgical Associates and practices alongside Dr. Jeremy Joyner and Dr. Douglas Joyner.
Dr. Sheff earned a bachelor of science in biochemistry from the University of South Alabama in Mobile, Ala. He then went on to earn his medical degree from the University of South Alabama College of Medicine, and upon graduation he completed a five year General Surgeon Residency at the Medical College of Georgia in Augusta, Georgia. He then went on to a Surgical Fellowship in minimally invasive and bariatric surgery at Gundersen Lutheran Hospitals in LaCrosse, Wisc. In his fellowship, Dr. Sheff spent an extra year learning to perfect laparoscopic and minimally invasive techniques, foremost among being bariatric surgical procedures.
Dr.Sheff is certified in both Advanced Cardiac Life Support and Advanced Trauma Life Support, and he is Board Certified in Surgery from the American Board of Surgery. He is an active member of both the Society of General and Endoscopic Surgeons (SAGES) and the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery. He has presented and published numerous papers in both advanced laparoscopy and bariatric surgery.
Dr. Sheff has been a member of the Americus community for several years, where he lives with his wife, Abigail (Metcalf) Sheff, their two sons, Noah and Nathan, and daughter Caroline. He is a member at Central Baptist Church.
Dr. Sheff has a passion for all aspects of laparoscopic surgery, which includes bariatric and weight loss surgery.
