Infection Prevention at Phoebe Sumter

Infection Prevention and Control -
Phoebe Sumter Medical Center

What is a Surgical Site Infection: A surgical site infection is an infection that occurs after surgery in the location where the surgery took place.Surgical Site Infection (SSI) measures include infections occurring during the hospital stay  and  after surgery for a defined period of time. Every patient and caregiver can significantly improve surgical outcomes and prevent infections from occurring and can be empowered through education.
Why is it important: Surgical Site Infections put you at risk for...
  • Prolonged Hospital Stay
  • Return to Surgery
  • Delayed Recovery
  • Other complications
Phoebe's Data versus Nationally Reported Data: The numbers that are included represent the most real-time data available.  Other national reporting sites share data that is comprised of averages spanning multiple years (typically 2 to 4 years). We submit this data quarterly, based on defined criteria, to the National Health Safety Network (NHSN), from which the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) extracts their publically reported data.
